Russ Gabriel
Russ Gabriel is a name synonymous with U.K. Techno. His first full techno release came out back in 1993 on his newly formed Ferox label. Russ went on to record for most of the major techno forces of the 90’s: Carl Craig’s Planet-E, Peacefrog Records, DJAX-Up-Beats, GPR, Force-Inc, Soma Recordings, New Electronica and Dave Clarke’s Magnetic North to name just a few.
Always with a passion for sound and synthesis, Russ initially set up his studio to make dub, but was soon converted to the electronic side of things by the early nineties radio shows of Colins Faver and Dale. After a host of releases, Russ put the small village of Liss, Hampshire on the techno map with the formation of Ferox. The biggest influence at this time were the innovative recordings coming out of the Netherlands which Russ saw as a natural progression from the first Detroit Techno. This influence can be heard on his classic “Peace EP” on Ferox and the “Voltage Control” album released soon after.
His live shows around Europe soon turned into DJ tours and by 1995 he was a regular in Canada and the U.S. as well as at home in Europe. After half a year in Detroit, Russ made the inevitable move and relocated himself and the label to London in 1997. After two dates in Japan and another European and U.S. tour, Russ cut right back on DJing and concentrated on more music for Ferox and his house imprint “Soul on Wax”. After 35 singles and 8 albums Ferox was shut down in 2000 and after another relocation to Frankfurt, Russ was able to concentrate one hundred percent on music production.
After a host of releases and remixes over the next few and an entire year working solely on his “Into the Unknown” album for Out of the Loop Recordings, Russ took a well-earned break from the electronic scene to work on Film music. Having set up an office a recording facilty in Stuttgart, Ferox has reformed and Russ has returned in 2007 with an EP under his Too Funk guise for the up and coming Sushitech imprint on their Pariter offshoot.
